2 choices, assuming you are a disciplined student.

Use whatever tricks you have learned to-date to wake yourself up--coffee, cold shower, washing your face with cold water, walking for a few minutes outside in the cold, etc.--then study hard. Get some rest before the exam and then review and take the exam.

Figure out how many hours until the exam; e.g., 12 hours. Figure out the minimum sleep you need to recharge; e.g., 5 hours. That leaves 7 hours to study. This will work only if you are highly disciplined and if you have the ability to study someplace where you will not be disturbed by family or friends. So, for example, if you are totally out of it now (say, 8pm), go to sleep, setting at least 2 alarm clocks for 1am. Get up at 1am. Take a quick shower to wake yourself up, Then study efficiently from say, 1:30am until the exam at 8am. However, if you haven't the discipline to get up at 1am and study, then you may be better off not going to sleep. However, studying when you are exhausted will be inefficient. Sometimes it can help to spend 10 minutes organizing what you have to do before you sleep. Then, when you wake up, you can hit the ground running.

I have used the 2nd approach many times for exams and for written assignments. But, I only did so after gaining enough confidence that I could tackle the studying/writing in a few hours before the deadline. Everyone would agree that this is not the right way to manage your time. But, the real world is such that these situations will happen. When they do, you need to maximize your effectiveness given the real constraints you have been dealt.

Good luck!

you'll probably do better if you get a good night's sleep. it's a bit late to absorb that more and it's proven that we do not do as wel when we're exhausted...

or you're not actually "sleepy" . anxiety, nervousness over the exam can produce the same psychological effect . your mind will leap back into action at exam time.
